A few days ago, I came across a story that got me thinking...
How many opportunities do we walk past every single day because we're too busy looking for the "perfect" business idea?
Here's what happened.
A guy I know is currently learning how to build an app.
The app already has some early validation, and he's excited about it, but like many entrepreneurs, he's stuck in that awkward phase where you're building something for the future while still needing cash today.
Instead of waiting months for the app to launch, he decided to set himself a challenge:
Make £7,000 ($9,000+) in 2 months.
Not through crypto.
Not through gambling.
Not through some secret AI trick.
Just old-school buying and selling.
His goal was simple:
"Can I generate the equivalent of my monthly salary through pure hustle and flipping?"
Now here's where it gets interesting...
One day he bumped into an old neighbour outside a rental property.
During the conversation, the neighbour casually mentioned that he was throwing away some chairs.
Apparently, he had bought them as part of a deal, didn't like how sturdy the legs felt, had lost the receipts, and had already decided they were headed for the trash.
Most people would have nodded and continued walking.
Instead, he asked:
"Can I take a look?"
The chairs were perfectly fine.
Not broken.
Not damaged.
Not unusable.
Just unwanted.
So he asked if he could have them.
The neighbour said yes.
Cost: £0.
At that point, he created a personal challenge:
Sell the chairs before my wife gets home from work.
No fancy listing.
No professional photography.
No complicated sales funnel.
No paid ads.
He simply walked next door.
He knocked.
And asked if they were interested in some nearly-new dining chairs at a reasonable price.
The neighbours seemed interested but were heading out.
Most people would have stopped there.
Instead, he told them he'd deliver the chairs for free.
An hour later, when they returned...
He was already standing in their garden with the chairs.
Sale closed immediately.
The Numbers
4 Chairs
Purchase Price: £0
Selling Price: £35
Profit: £35 ($45)
Time invested: Less than a few hours.
Now before anyone says:
"It's only £35."
That's not the point.
The point is that £35 was sitting in a pile of "trash."
The opportunity existed before he arrived.
Most people simply couldn't see it.
What really caught my attention was this:
People often say they need money to start a business.
But many successful entrepreneurs started by spotting value where others saw junk.
A free chair becomes £35.
A discarded table becomes another sale.
One flip becomes ten.
Ten become one hundred.
And suddenly you've built momentum.
